(Manama) – The cool desert nights are set to heat up with action this week as the second round of the 2016/2017 Bahrain Drag Racing Championship takes place at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

BIC’s world-class quarter-mile drag strip will be the centre of attention for more than 100 of the world’s top drag racers and their crews, including some of the most legendary figures in the sport, as they gather for four nights of intense competition.

The region’s most competitive and highly sought-after drag racing series is in its 12th season and it continues to grow from strength to strength. As a member of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Worldwide Network, BIC is hosting the championship under the prestigious NHRA banner. It also awards champion drivers a “Wally”, which is an iconic trophy given only to competitors who are winners in NHRA-sanctioned events.

Action begins with back-to-back nights of Test and Tune on Tuesday and Wednesday (Editor’s note: December 20 and 21) from 5pm to 11pm on each day.

Qualifying will follow on Thursday (December 22) from 5pm to midnight, paving the way for Race Day on Friday (December 23) when the head-to-heads begin from 2pm onwards.

There are a total number of 15 competition classes this season. The cars classes include the Street 4 and 6, the Outlaw Front-Wheel-Drive (FWD), the Super Street 6-Cylinder, the Outlaw 6-Cylinder, the Street V8, the Super Street V8, the Outlaw 10.5, the Index 8.50, the Index 9.50, the Index 10.50 and the highly competitive Pro Mod. The bikes classes include the Street Bike 9.50, Street Bike, Super Street Bike and Pro Bike.

The 2016/2017 season is set to feature five rounds, to be held until March of next year. Following this weekend’s second meeting, round three will be the first of the new calendar year, set from January 3 to 6. The fourth round follows from February 21 to 23, and then the season finale will take place from February 28 to March 3.
