FM receives UN’s new envoy for Yemen

(Abu Dhabi) – H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister of UAE, welcomed the UN’s new special envoy for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Sheikh Abdullah received an update from the UN envoy on the latest developments in Yemen in the light of violent and hostile acts perpetrated by Houthi and Saleh militias against the civilian people. The meeting also discussed efforts being made by the UN to convene the Geneva Peace Conference this month. Sheikh Abdullah and the UN envoy also exchanged views on the current events at regional and international levels.
The UAE Foreign Minister said the UAE was following with grave concern the unfolding humanitarian conditions in Yemen and their impact on internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other affected people, emphasising that the UAE would spare no effort in assisting the Yemeni people by assuming its humanitarian duty towards them.
“The GCC realises that a solution to the Yemeni crisis has to be political and based on a clear-cut reference representing the legitimacy, the GCC Initiative, the UN Security Council’s relevant resolutions and the Riyadh Declaration. He added that the GCC countries were exerting humanitarian efforts alongside the political process, but the Houthis are dampening these efforts and abusing the humanitarian pause,” Sheikh Abdullah said.
On his part, the UN envoy expressed thanks to the UAE for its tireless efforts to resolve the Yemeni crisis, and lauded its initiative to airlift a group of injured Yemenis to receive treatment in the UAE as well as the humanitarian and relief assistance it extended to Yemen within the framework of Operation Restoring Hope through coordination with members of the coalition countries and support of the relief operations centre in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.
